The Ukrainian Institute and DocudaysUA festival will partner to conduct The Ukrainian Doc Preview 2020, a showcase designed for the promotion of the Ukrainian film industry. The programme will take place the second time in 2020 during the industrial platform of the Docudays festival.
The Ukrainian Doc Preview was established as a platform for professional communication, support and development of the Ukrainian documentary film and for presentation of Ukraine to the international community of film industry professionals. In 2010, 6 outstanding full-length documentaries that are at the post-production stage will be presented to international film industry experts in order to help them find partners for distribution, cooperation, or additional funding. The event will also include networking opportunities and individual meetings.

Olga Birzul, Head of Film Programmes at the Ukrainian Institute, says: "The Ukrainian Institute aims to create efficient cooperation opportunities between Ukrainian and international film professionals. Therefore, one of our cinema sector's priority areas is to showcase the newest Ukrainian films at various production stages. Unfortunately, only a very small proportion of non-fiction projects received public funding in 2019. However, I hope that cooperation between the Ukrainian Institute and the Docudays UA in the frames of the Ukrainian Doc Preview initiative will make it easier for documentary filmmakers to find reliable international partners."

Olga Beshmelnitsyna, one of the participants of the showcase in 2019, says: "I think everyone understands the obvious benefits of such previews. But of course, an opportunity to see the first reaction of experts to a film is the exclusive added value. Since we have demonstrated an exclusively Ukrainian project, it was important for us to understand its international potential. This usually takes a lot of time in correspondence, but this time the reaction and the feedback have been quick. In addition, it is an opportunity to hear feedback on the commercial potential of the film together with the creative team. I think it is useful to have such discussions at this stage, so that everyone understands what can be improved and how to move on."

In 2020, the Ukrainian Doc Preview will have its second edition. The 2019 showcase participants had a chance to meet representatives and experts of Karlovy Vary, DOK Leipzig, Visions du Réel, Beldocs, Sheffield Doc/Fest, One World and Krakow Film Festival.

More information about the application process is available here. The submissions for the participation in the showcase are open until 3 February 2020.
