The mosque in honor of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent and his wife Roxelana was built in 2007 in the Prymorskyi Park of Mariupol, on the site of a mosque built in 1906 and destroyed by the Bolsheviks in 1936. The mosque and the Islamic cultural center of the same name operating there were built of marble brought from Turkey. The work was funded by the city’s Azerbaijani diaspora and Turkish businessman Salih Cihani with the support of the city council. Before the large-scale invasion, about 4,000 Muslims lived in Mariupol.
On March 12, 2022, the Russian army fired heavy artillery at the mosque of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent and his wife Roxelana, located in Mariupol. According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, at the time of the shelling, 86 Turkish citizens, including 34 children, were hiding in the mosque. Due to the complete blockade of Mariupol by Russian troops, the fate of the people and the nature of the destruction are currently unknown.
