Kira Muratova. The More Things Change…
On 5-20 December 2019, the Austrian Film Institute will hold the screening of Kira Muratova’s films under the bilateral Year of Culture Ukraine-Austria 2019.
The retrospective is organised by the Ukrainian Institute and Dovzhenko Centre jointly with the Austrian partners.

When Kira Muratova died last year, her chosen native land Ukraine lost the country’s undisputed master of cinema, and the world lost one of those rare, almost non-existent artists who were able to maintain bravado – and refuse to compromise their aesthetical and ethical credo – across various distinctly different political regimes.

The usual western cliché would insist that Muratova had troubles with “draconian structures of socialist realism”. However, it was precisely her insistence to focus on everyday life, often in neglected provincial spaces, and to seek absurdity where others found metaphysics, that separated Muratova drastically from her contemporaries.
