Having verified that submissions meet the technical criteria, the long list has comprised 27 translators. The majority of nominees translate from the Ukrainian into English and Polish languages. Besides, the long list includes translators into German, Italian, French, Portuguese, Czech, Serbian, Bulgarian, Macedonian, Greek and Arabic languages.

The geography of the contest is global: we received submissions from 15 countries, namely Germany, France, the UK, Poland, the Czech Republic, Italy, Serbia, Greece, Bulgaria, Northern Macedonia, the USA, Canada, Australia, Brazil and Lebanon. The largest number of submissions was sent by foreign publishing houses, Ukraine’s diplomatic missions and research institutions globally.

The Drahomán Prize founded by the Ukrainian Institute, PEN Ukraine and the Ukrainian Book Institute aims to support and acknowledge translators from Ukrainian into other languages. This Prize is awarded for excellence in translation and contribution to the promotion of Ukrainian literature abroad.

The Prize jury in 2020 consists of:

• writer, President of PEN Ukraine Andriy Kurkov;
• General Director of the Ukrainian Institute Volodymyr Sheiko;
• Director of the Ukrainian Book Institute Oleksandra Koval;
• researcher, translator, Vice President of PEN Ukraine Ola Hnatiuk;
• poet and translator Ostap Slyvynsky;
• manager of book and intellectual projects at Institut francais d’Ukraine Valentyna Stukalova;
• translator Natalia Ivanychuk;
• translator Yurii Prokhasko;
• Ukrainian and Canadian literary scholar and writer Mark Robert Stech.

According to conditions of the Prize, the short list of candidates will be announced no later than March 15, 2021. The winner of the Prize will be announced during an official awards ceremony in April 2021 that will take place in Kyiv.

The Drahomán Prize winner will receive a statuette designed by a prominent Ukrainian sculptor and a 2,000 EUR cash prize (taxes included). The Ukrainian Institute and the Ukrainian Book Institute will also provide professional opportunities and promote the laureate’s work (translation residencies and participation in international fairs and festivals).

PEN Ukraine is a cultural and human rights public organization uniting 128 members, Ukrainian intellectuals – writers, journalists, scholars, publishers, translators, human rights defenders, cultural managers. The Ukrainian PEN is one of 146 national PEN Centres of PEN International. It is a co-founder of the Vasyl Stus Prize, the Yuri Shevelov Prize and the George Gongadze Prize.

The Ukrainian Book Institute is a government entity affiliated to the Ministry of Culture and Information Policy of Ukraine. Its mission is to develop state policy in the book sector, promote reading in Ukraine, support book publishing, encourage translation activity, and popularize Ukrainian literature abroad.
