Ukrainian Musicians at the Campos do Jordão International Winter Festival
Since 1970, one of the most prestigious music forums for young performers has been held every July in Brazil – the Campos do Jordão International Winter Festival (Festival de Campos do Jordão). In 2024, thanks to the Ukrainian Institute’s expanded work in Latin America and a new partnership with the São Paulo State Symphony Orchestra (OSESP), Ukrainian musicians were given the opportunity to participate in the festival.
Following an open call, the recipients of festival scholarships were members of the Kyiv-based Petrichor Quartet:
– Yeva Tovshchyk (violin)
– Yevhen Hudymenko (violin)
– Sofiia Potipaka (viola)
– Karolina Muzychenko (cello)
The month-long festival brings together hundreds of musicians from around the world and takes place across several venues in São Paulo and Campos do Jordão. These include the concert halls of São Paulo, Mackenzie Institute, Capivari Park, the chapel of Palácio Boa Vista, and the Claudio Santoro Auditorium. Thanks to the support of the government of the State of São Paulo, all performances are free to the public.
In addition to concerts, a significant portion of the festival is devoted to masterclasses and mentoring sessions led by prominent music educators from Brazil, the USA, Switzerland, and the UK. The festival’s program is coordinated by Fabio Zanon and OSESP Music Academy Director Rogério Zaghi.
The Petrichor Quartet’s participation in the festival was initiated by VERE MUSIC FUND. The Ukrainian musicians introduced Brazilian colleagues and broader festival audiences to works by Borys Lyatoshynsky. One of their performances was especially symbolic: in the presence of Jorge Ryba, Honorary Consul of Ukraine in São Paulo, the quartet performed Quartet No. 4 “Poltava” by contemporary Ukrainian composer Zoltan Almashi – honoring the contribution of Ukrainian culture to the international music scene.
The programme of events was supported by the International Renaissance Foundation with the assistance of the Cultural Diplomacy Foundation.
