Ukraine’s Programme at the 78th Cannes Film Festival

The 78th Cannes Film Festival opens May 13, with Ukraine represented through a series of screenings and events, some of which are organised in collaboration with the Ukrainian Institute and supported by the Institut français d’Ukraine and the Embassy of France in Ukraine. 

As part of a special event titled Ukraine Day, films dedicated to the events of the Russian-Ukrainian war will be screened: 

  • Zelensky, directed by Yves Jeuland and Lise Vapné
  •  Our War, directed by Bernard-Henri Lévy and Marc Roussel
  • 20,000 Metres to Andriivka, directed by Mstyslav Chernov 

Within the Directors’ Fortnight section, the world premiere of the documentary Militanthropos will take place on 21 May. The film is directed by Yelyzaveta Smit, Alina Gorlova, and Semen Mozgovyi, and produced by Yevhen Rachkovskyi (TABOR film collective). It is a winner of the Ukrainian Institute’s 2024 proMOTION programme and Eurimages, and a part of the ARTE Generation Ukraine collection. 

Additionally, the La Cinef section will feature the animated short film ‘My Grandmother is a Skydiver’ by Polina Piddubna. 

For the fifth consecutive year, the Ukrainian Institute has partnered with the Producers Network programme at the Marché du Film – Festival de Cannes, and will present a Ukrainian delegation of five producers: 

  • Anna Kapustina (Albatros Communicos)
  • Sashko Chubko (Contemporary Ukrainian Cinema)
  • Olha Tugarinova (Kshtalt Productions)
  •  Vika Khomenko (Moon Man)
  • Viktor Shevchenko (Packgauz Production) 

As part of Cannes Docs in the Spotlighted Projects section, the documentary project ‘Ashes Settling in Layers on the Surface’ by director Zoya Laktionova, producer Natalia Libet, and co-producer Victor Ede will be presented. 

Ukrainian producer Volodymyr Yatsenko (ForeFilms), nominated by the Ukrainian Institute, has been selected to take part in the ProducersOnTheMove programme by European Film Promotion (EFP). This initiative supports producers from 20 European countries in building international professional networks and runs during the Marché du Film – Festival de Cannes. 

This year, the Cannes Film Festival will take place from 13 to 24 May, with the film market running from 13 to 21 May.
