The project is part of the collection Ukrainian Artists Through the Ages, which explores the work of Ukrainian artists from the 1960s whose creations were partially or entirely lost due to political repression and censorship during the Soviet era. The Sixties (Shistdesyatnyky) was a literary, artistic, and socio-political movement among the Ukrainian intellectual elite from the late 1950s to the early 1970s. It emerged during the brief “thaw” of the Soviet regime and was dedicated to preserving national culture and language.

The collection on Google Arts & Culture highlights the lives and artistic legacies of key figures from this movement, including Alla Horska, Halyna Zubchenko, Lyubov Panchenko, Halyna Sevruk, and Lyudmyla Semykina. These artists not only supported the dissident movement in Ukraine—suffering repression at the hands of Soviet authorities—but also championed feminist ideals, each advocating for women’s rights in their own way.

Ukrainian Artists Through the Ages is part of the broader Ukraine is Here initiative on Google Arts & Culture. Developed in cooperation with the Ministry of Culture and Information Policy, this project aims to preserve and promote Ukrainian art and culture. Through interactive stories, virtual galleries, 3D models of historical artefacts, and video and audio content, Ukrainian culture is now more accessible to audiences worldwide.
