Statement by the musicological community of Ukraine

Statement by the musicological community of Ukraine to musicians, musicologists, cultural institutions, and public organizations around the world

Culture is never beyond politics and economics. It has always been an integral part of any society. Cultural heritage is an important element of domestic and foreign cultural policies, expressed in how values of each nation are formulated and promoted, how differing points of view are tolerated, and how controversial positions are debated. Cultural heritage can only exist as long as it is actualized and practiced through artistic and critical discourses.

In times of war and humanitarian crisis, culture cannot be neutral or passive. Today, all artistic and scholarly oeuvres are perceived and interpreted through the lens of the situation unfolding before our eyes. Russia’s war against Ukraine, which began in 2014 and entered a phase of a full-scale invasion on February 24, has already changed the world, resulting in a major global reappraisal of values and agendas.

With this statement, we would like to focus on Russian culture with its enduring narrative of imperial “greatness” and “unique mission,” and the colonialist pathos of “saviors” and “liberators” of the “small nations.” A large number of scholarly works and projects, imbued with this particular narrative, have been continuously presented to the world’s intellectual community. Their a priori uncritical perception of Russian cultural heritage has been in need of revision for a long time.

It is our position that everyone who promotes Russian art today excuses the actions of the Russian state, whether consciously or unconsciously. Without critical reassessment of Russia’s cultural heritage, political and economic sanctions will remain half-hearted measures. We are aware that multidimensional critical analysis and reconceptualization of any phenomenon takes time. However, we find ourselves in extraordinary circumstances, calling for urgent considerations and immediate consequences.

Thus, we appeal to the worldwide community of musicians and music scholars, in and outside of institutions of Higher Education, to join us in the following actions that are absolutely and unequivocally fundamental to us:

  • Pause any engagement with Russian culture and its artifacts until the end of the war that Russia has waged against Ukraine and its civilians;
  • Continue interaction with Russian composers, performers, and scholars, who have represented and continue to represent Russia within the international artistic community only if they officially and publicly condemn Russia’s policy toward Ukraine and the war, including Russia’s illegal claims of Crimea and the Ukrainian Donbas.

We fully appreciate the power and strength of Russia’s authoritarian regime towards its citizens, and the fear it instills, but the price that Ukraine pays for every moment of the unleashed aggression is in the lives of people, including the lives of fallen artists.

The claim that only Putin is to blame for the war must be struck out from anyone’s narrative, as his rule is based on a solid foundation, with art and culture being important components. Therefore, cooperation with the Russians in all spheres, including culture, must cease until the end of the war in Ukraine.
