The screening of the film “The Way” translated into Indonesian
On March 18, 2024, as part of a meeting between representatives of the Ukrainian Institute, Alim Aliev, Deputy Director General, and Yulia Mykulych, Program Manager for India and Indonesia, and the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI), a screening and discussion of the Indonesian-subtitled film “The Way” by Suspilne Media took place.
The idea of showing a documentary about Crimea and the Crimean Tatars in Jakarta is a result of the visit of the Indonesian delegation to Ukraine, as well as a component of the visit of the Ukrainian delegation to Indonesia from March 18 to 22, 2024. The Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) organized the event with the participation of representatives of the leading Islamic organizations of Indonesia and Ukrainian delegates. The event included a demonstration of the documentary film “The Way” translated into Indonesian, along with a discussion with the participation of Ukrainian delegates.
The topic of Crimea and the Crimean Tatars is of great importance in the process of building bilateral relations not just between Ukraine and Indonesia but also between Ukraine and Indonesian Muslim communities.
The screening of the film for a general Indonesian audience allowed the Indonesian guests to get acquainted with the Crimean Tatar culture and history. Besides, convey the message about Crimea as a historical part of the territory of Ukraine and speak out about human rights violations in the annexed Crimea, as well as the persecution of Ukrainian Muslims by the occupying authorities.
About the film “The Way”
“The Way” is a documentary project produced by Suspilne Media, dedicated to the Day of Remembrance of the Victims of the Deportation of Crimean Tatars by the Stalinist Regime in 1944 and the Day of the Struggle for the Rights of the Crimean Tatar People. The documentary focuses on the personal stories of Crimean Tatars from Crimea by the Soviet authorities in 1944, their return to Ukraine in the 1980s and 1990s, and the participation of Crimean Tatars in events related to the Russian Federation military invasion of Ukraine and the subsequent annexation of Crimea in 2014.
