For demonstration in the Mexican capital, 35 posters by nine Ukrainian poster artists were selected, including Anastasia Pustovarova, Olesya Drashkaba, Svitlana Hryb, Asya Krasylnykova, Anna Sarvira, Tetyana Yakunova, Masha Foya, Katya Lisova, and Solomiya Horbyuk. The exhibition and a series of thematic events aimed to tell visitors and viewers the stories of women defenders, heroines, mothers, women who are waiting, and at the same time women volunteers. Thematic blocks of the exposition included: “Fighter”, “Rescuer”, “Mother”, “Woman who waits”, “Victim”, “Future mother”, “Witch”, and “Woman in the new present.”  Each of the posters tells the stories of Ukrainian women during the war, along with the stories of the artists themselves. 

“War does not have a female face,” said Nobel laureate from Belarus, Svetlana Alexievich. “We cannot agree with her, because every day we see many female faces in this war. These are military women, volunteers, mothers who take care of their children and families, and women who are waiting for their husbands, sons, brothers, or daughters from the war. These are women who live their daily routine between shelling, blackouts, and also support others and believe in Victory.” 

In turn, the curator of the exhibition, Ukrainian artist and co-founder of Sunseed Art, Olesya Drashkaba, commented: “It was very important for us to tell about our war in Mexico precisely through the art and stories of our women, because, on the one hand, this is a distant country, which is strongly influenced by Russian propaganda, and on the other hand, it is a country with powerful women’s movements and a great artistic history…” 

The exhibition was opened by the EU Ambassador to Mexico, Mr. Jerome Auden, and the Ambassador of Ukraine to Mexico, Ms. Oksana Dramaretska. 

Opening the exhibition, Gauthier Minho said: “The Russian invasion of Ukraine is a bit abstract for the Mexican and Latin American public, so the artists’ expressions of the daily reality they live in and how they react to this war create a more humane side that can move and speak to the Mexican public more than geopolitical discussions.”
