The event attracted more than 2,000 attendees and was held at one of the city’s iconic concert venues — Circo Volador, which has previously hosted renowned metal bands such as Arch Enemy, Thy Art Is Murder, and Carcass.

Ukraine was represented by the band 1914, a metal group from Lviv founded in 2014, known for blending elements of doom, death, and black metal. The band is among the most prominent acts on Ukraine’s heavy music scene and plays an important role in representing Ukrainian music internationally. 

Since the start of the full-scale invasion, the musicians have been actively informing their international audiences about the realities of the war in Ukraine, using their artistic platform as a means of communication and support. 

According to the band’s frontman, Dmytro Kumar, the performance also marked an important step in engaging with a new audience and context: 
“Ukrainian bands are not often invited to Mexico, and this market remains largely unexplored for Ukraine, which is especially critical in the context of strong Russian cultural presence — because if we don’t go, they will. That’s why it was important for us to travel to another continent and perform, including songs about the Ukrainian soldier. People knew our songs and sang along with us, which was incredibly moving. There were Ukrainian flags in the audience, and the organisers placed our flag on stage next to the Mexican flag. The reaction was extremely warm and supportive.”
