Ukrainian Classical Music in Brazil: 130th anniversary of the birth of Borys Liatoshynsky
To mark the 130th anniversary of the birth of Borys Liatoshynsky, the Ukrainian Institute is supporting projects that bring his music to international audiences. One of such initiative was a collaboration with the Embassy of Ukraine in Brazil, featuring performances at the prestigious Winter Festival in Campos do Jordão and a series of concerts across the country.
Pianist Kateryna-Sophia Shyk performed on some of the festival’s most renowned stages in São Paulo, led masterclasses for young Brazilian musicians, and introduced audiences to Liatoshynsky’s works through a chamber music program.
In addition to the festival, concerts were held in Nova Odessa and Brasília, organized thanks to the efforts of the Embassy of Ukraine in Brazil. The programs featured works by Ukrainian classical composers, including Liatoshynsky, alongside other repertoire.
This string of events marks the second year of collaboration between the Ukrainian Institute and the São Paulo State Symphony Orchestra (OSESP Foundation), with continued support from the Embassy of Ukraine in Brazil. We aim to further strengthen this partnership by expanding the geography of performances and inviting more Ukrainian artists to participate in Brazil’s leading cultural platforms.
Our mission is to honor Borys Liatoshynsky, a central figure in Ukrainian modernism, while broadening the presence of Ukrainian music across Latin America. These efforts not only foster intercultural dialogue but also open new professional horizons for Ukrainian performers.
