The Ukrainian programme at the festival was presented by singer, composer and researcher of traditional music Mariana Sadovska.  

During her 30-minute set, the artist performed part of her programme Ukrainian Callings. The programme combined traditional Ukrainian songs, original compositions and stories about Ukraine’s contemporary experience.  

In particular, the following were performed:  

• the wedding song ‘SlalaZironka’(‘The little star shone’);  
• the requiem ‘PlyveKacha’ – in memory of all those who paid the ultimate price for Ukraine’s freedom; 
• the harvest song ‘Oyvidvern,Bozhe, khmaru’ (‘Oh, turn away the cloud, O God’), which serves as an example of archaic ritual chants that the singer researches during her folklore expeditions across Ukraine;  
• the original composition ‘Spring Calling’,performed following a story about Russian shelling of energy infrastructure and the winters endured by Ukrainians during the war; 
• an arrangement of ‘Oidavnodavno’ (‘Oh, a long, long time ago’); 
• theoriginalcomposition ‘Calling Bird’; 
• the song ‘Zvidkyty,chorna valko’ (‘Where are you from, black wave’), with lyrics by Serhiy Zhadan, with which Mariana Sadovska concluded her performance, recounting her concerts in Mariupol in 2014 and the power of song in helping to preserve courage and hope.  

Following the main programme, there was a 30-minute improvisational jam session featuring musicians from the Netherlands – Joost Lijbaart and Bram Stadhouders – as well as musicians from India.  

The India Jazz Circuit festival is an important platform for innovators and masters of contemporary jazz, providing artists from around the world with an opportunity to present their creative ideas and experiments. Participation in the event opens up new opportunities for presenting Ukrainian music on the global cultural stage.
