Ukrainian poetry at Poetry Africa 2025

With the support of the Embassy of Ukraine in the Republic of South Africa and the Ukrainian Institute, Olena Huseinova took part in Poetry Africa 2025 one of the continent’s leading literary festivals held in Durban this October.

As part of the program, she met with students of the Journalism and Media faculties at the Durban University of Technology to discuss the bridges between poetry and journalism, the role of culture in times of war, and the importance of art in fostering dialogue between societies.

During the session “Poetry as an Architecture for Social Justice”, Huseinova performed alongside writers from Kenya, Réunion, Ghana, Jamaica, and Belgium, bringing contemporary Ukrainian voices to an international audience.

This marked the seventh year of Ukrainian participation in Poetry Africa, a festival that gathers poets and artists from around the world to promote cultural exchange, understanding, and creative freedom.
