At the 50th International Book Fair in Buenos Aires, one of Latin America’s most important literary gatherings, Ukrainian voices became part of a powerful global conversation — not only about literature, but about war, memory, and the urgency of telling the truth. 

Through a series of conversations with Latin American authors, including Héctor Abad Faciolince and María Rosa Lojo, moderated by Eduardo Slusarczuk and Hinde Pomeraniec, Ukrainian writers Artem Chapeye and Eugenia Kuznetsova reflected on what it means to write in times of war. 

Beyond discussions, Ukrainian culture was experienced in many forms. During Día de Ucrania, the literary-musical project ‘Poets’ by Solomiia Chubai brought to life voices of Ukrainian poets across three centuries, creating a bridge between generations through music and poetry. The artist also engaged younger audiences through a workshop built on songs and musical games. 

The Ukrainian programme extended to children and families as well: through a VR experience inspired by the magical world of Tukoni, created by illustrator Oksana Bula, visitors were invited to discover contemporary Ukrainian storytelling in an immersive and playful way. 

At the Ukrainian stand, visitors could explore Ukrainian literature, as well as learn more about Ukrainian customs and traditions. The illustrated postcards offered a closer look at contemporary Ukrainian authors, inviting visitors to read excerpts from their works via a QR code. The stand itself carries a long history — it has been present at the Buenos Aires Book Fair since 1986, driven by the efforts and dedication of a Ukrainian diaspora community in Argentina. 

Ukraine’s participation in the Buenos Aires International Book Fair is important not only as a form of cultural presence, but as an opportunity to enter one of the world’s largest Spanish-language book markets through direct engagement with readers, publishers, authors and media. Events like this help create long-term visibility for Ukrainian culture beyond news coverage of the war, allowing Ukrainian voices to become part of the local cultural landscape rather than a temporary subject of international attention. 

Ukrainian presence at the fair is organized by the Ukrainian Institute, the Central Representation of Ukraine in the Argentine Republic (RCU), the Embassy of Ukraine in Argentina and the Embassy of Austria in Buenos Aires.
