On 10 July, the exhibition ‘Characters of the 21st-Century Theatre Stage. A Dialogue of Identities: Ukraine – Lithuania’ opened in Vilnius. The project was organised by the Scenography Gallery and the Lithuanian Theatre, Music and Cinema Museum with the support of the Ukrainian Institute.
About the exhibition
The exhibition showcases how contemporary artists use costumes and puppets to reveal the essence of characters and express national identity.
At the opening, project coordinator Aukse Kapočiutė -Vaitkuviene, museum director Nida Jarockiene, and exhibition co-curator Bohdan Polishchuk emphasised that the exhibition is more than just art, it is a manifestation of solidarity.
Vladyslav Zozulia, Third Secretary of the Embassy of Ukraine in Lithuania, delivered a speech on behalf of Ambassador Olha Nikitchenko, stating: ‘We are a creative nation that always strives to outdo itself. Events like this show — we are alive, we create, we look ahead.‘ He also stressed that Lithuania is not only a reliable ally in matters of security but also a close friend in the fields of culture and the arts.
The opening programme featured lectures on the Kyiv School of Scenography and the history of Ukrainian theatrical costume, as well as a curator-led tour during which Ukrainian artists Danyila Kolot and Oleh Tatarynov — both present at the event — shared insights into their designs.
