From 23 to 29 September 2024, the exhibition Ukrainian Theatre Costume of the 20th-21st Centuries: Photographs, Sketches, Costumes was held at the Rozdroża Initiative Centre in Lublin, organised with the support of the Ukrainian Institute.
About the Event
The exhibition was part of a large-scale international project, Ukrainian Theatre Costume of the 20th-21st Centuries: Identity, Context, Landscape, implemented by the NGO ‘Gallery of Scenography’ (Lviv) in partnership with the Museum of Theatre, Music, and Cinema of Ukraine (Kyiv). The project was supported by the Ukrainian Cultural Foundation (UCF) and PlaceID (Poland).
The project aimed to showcase Ukrainian theatrical costumes as an integral part of the broader history of Ukrainian theatre and art. It sought to challenge the Soviet and Russian narratives imposed by imperial propaganda by placing these costumes within the context of European history.
The Exposition
The exposition featured photographs, sketches, and costumes, reflecting the work of artists from various eras, styles, and regions.
Highlights included:
- Renowned figures from the 20th century who significantly contributed to the history of Ukrainian art: Vadym Meller (1884–1962), Anatol Petrytskyi (1895–1964), and Myron Kypriyan (1930–2019).
- Artists representing different generations and creative schools, including Hanna Ipatieva, Olena Polishchuk, Danyla Kolot, Natalia Rydvanetska, Oleh Tatarinov, Inessa Kulchytska, Yulia Zaulychna, Lyubov Dushyna, and others.
- Student works offering modern interpretations of Ukrainian theatrical costumes.
