Reading series ‘Voices from Ukraine’ in Berlin
The Literaturhaus Berlin, in cooperation with the Ukrainian Institute, presented ‘Voices from Ukraine,’ a series of readings featuring renowned contemporary Ukrainian authors, from February to November 2023.
About the project
The series of readings ‘Voices from Ukraine’ addressed the question of the role of literature in times of war through the current works of Ukrainian authors. The writers reported on their current work, reacting to the ongoing Russian war in Ukraine.
All readings took place at the Literaturhaus Berlin and were streamed on YouTube.
'Amadoka' by Sofia Andrukhovych
On November 20, 2023, a discussion was held on the first part of Amadoka by Sofia Andrukhovych. The book, translated into German and published by Residenz Verlag, was the subject of the event. As part of the reading series, Andrukhovych discussed themes of identity, memory, and recollection with Germanist and translator Sofija Onufriv.
'Alles Ist Teurer Als Ukrainisches Leben' by Kateryna Mishchenko
On March 7, a conversation took place between Kateryna Mishchenko (author of the collection Alles Ist Teurer Als Ukrainisches Leben) and editor Nina Weller.
'Summer in Odesa' by Irina Kilimnik
On March 14, the premiere of Irina Kilimnik’s book Summer in Odesa took place. Irina Kilimnik is the author of numerous essays, reviews, and short stories. Born in Odesa, she has lived in Germany since the age of 15.
Irina’s conversation partner was author Masha Jacobs.
Iryna Tsilyk & Artem Cheh
The series “Voices from Ukraine” 2023 continued in the autumn with writer Artem Cheh, a serviceman in the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU), and filmmaker and poet Iryna Tsilyk. They discussed writing and life during the war. Iryna Tsilyk came to Berlin, while Artem Cheh joined live.
Cultural manager and translator Evgenia Lopata moderated the event.
