Ukrainian Institute + Reddit

The Ukrainian Institute, in collaboration with Reddit, an international social news aggregator, launched the online programme Food and Culture. 

About Reddit

The collaboration occurred in the AMA (Ask Me Anything) format, a series of thematic online Q&A sessions where the Reddit audience engaged in expert discussions with invited speakers. Reddit has 24 million users and is particularly popular in the United States. 

About the Food and Culture Programme

The Food and Culture programme consisted of four sessions aimed at introducing an international audience to the history and contemporary significance of Ukrainian cuisine, as well as its role in public diplomacy. 

Programme Participants: 

  • Tetyana Filevska, Creative Director of the Ukrainian Institute and curator of the Ukraine: Food & History project, introduced cuisine as an integral part of Ukraine’s intangible cultural heritage, its historical transformations, and its influence on global gastronomy. 
  • Viktoria Lialina-Boiko, Director of the Department of Public Diplomacy and Communications at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, discussed Ukraine’s culinary diplomacy during wartime, highlighting initiatives such as Minefields Honey and Grain from Ukraine. 
  • Olena Braichenko, a researcher of gastronomic culture, founder of the їzhakultura project, and editor-in-chief of the publishing house Yizhak, spoke about modern Ukrainian cuisine. 
  • Marianna Dushar, an anthropologist and researcher of the cuisine of the Ukrainian diaspora in the United States and the Galician food tradition, examined the role of food in shaping identity and a sense of belonging. 

The programme became part of a series of posts on the r/food subreddit, promoting Ukrainian cuisine and fostering a global community of over 1.8 million fans of Ukrainian food.
