Ukrainian illustrators at the Frankfurt Book Fair
Five Ukrainian illustrators presented their works online at the Frankfurt Book Fair
Ukrainian Institute launched in 2020 the first programme in the Literature section — a mobility programme for book illustrators Illuminate. Within the programme, five Ukrainian illustrators presented their works online during one of the biggest literature event in the world — Frankfurt Book Fair.

The participants had an opportunity to establish contacts with representatives of foreign publishers, and institutions cooperating with book illustrators; to present their portfolios, exchange professional experience with peers from other countries. Illustrators also took part in a number of masterclasses and professional discussions on storytelling, copyright, licensing for publishers, the content for children, a new role of books in the 21st century, etc.
The participants of this year programme were Romana Ruban, Kate Didyk, Tetiana Zahachevska (Tsyupka), Oksana Drachkovska, and Polina Doroshenko.

"Communicating with publishers, other illustrators and publishers I realized that it is not enough just to draw nice pictures. Illustrator is expected to suggest new ideas, discoveries, way of thinking, especially in the fast-changing world. A book industry offers a lot of opportunities. It is easy to get lost without clear vision of my personal style. It is hight time to make revolution in our heads", shared impressions after the programme one of the participant Oksana Drachkovska.

The name of the programme comes from the Latin word illumino - to illuminate, to decorate, and is reminiscent of the decoration of manuscripts illustrated compositions, the so-called illuminated manuscripts.
