About the initiative

Ukrainian Institute together with the Ukrainian Cultural Foundation and the European Union’s House of Europe programme are launching an initiative to support “Zapravka”. The initiative aims to:

→ increase the international visibility of Ukrainian art residencies and inform the international community about the opportunities that exist in Ukraine for artists, curators and other professionals in the arts and culture sector;

→ raise the professional standards of residency programmes in Ukraine in order to increase their competitiveness in the international artistic environment;

→ to attract international experience through the participation of foreign artists, curators and art managers in Ukrainian residences.

In recent years, the popularity of art residencies as a format of artistic interaction in Ukraine has grown significantly. Residences create the infrastructure for critical thinking and artistic experimentation, cross-cultural collaboration, interdisciplinary production of knowledge and research. Today, about a hundred projects in Ukraine aim to create and develop art residencies of various types and formats. However, the process of development of art residences, their distribution on the territory of Ukraine, experience exchange with colleagues from abroad, as well as the visibility of Ukrainian art residences on the world map is still unstructured.

That is why the Ukrainian Institute is consolidating its efforts with the main donors in the field of culture in Ukraine — the Ukrainian Cultural Foundation and the House of Europe programme — to support and stimulate artistic mobility.

Acceptance of applications 2020

In 2020, the Zapravka initiative will begin collecting information on Ukrainian art residencies to place this data on DutchCulture|TransArtists, the world’s largest online database of residences. The TransArtists database is designed to stimulate and enhance the international mobility of artists, curators and other professionals in the cultural sector.

Artist residencies from Ukraine that are interested in international cooperation are kindly invited to fill in this form. To do so, please download the form on your computer, fill it in and send it to zapravkaprogramme@gmail.com along with files required in the form. Please send all the documents no later than September 10, 2020, 23:59 Kyiv time. The received data will be processed and uploaded to the DutchCulture | TransArtists database.

For residence information to be placed in the TransArtists database, the residence must meet the following criteria:

→ be sustainable (one-time residency programmes cannot be added to a permanent database);

→ be a professional residence for specialists in the culture and arts sector (hotels, boarding houses, recreation complexes, etc. are not allowed to participate in the programme);

→ be ready to interact with foreign artists, in particular – to have in the team at least one person who speaks English;

→ do not receive income from the residency programme.

If your residence is only at the initial stage of its activity or is one-time, information about it can be added to a separate review material, which will be posted on the DutchCulture | TransArtists platform.
